How to Compete |
Curriculum |
Head-to-Head Races
- Roadcourses
- Oval Superspeedways
- Drag Racing
|
With a well setup car, good fuel strategy and strong team work, you will win races. |
Learn to race engineer with these resources:
- Overview on the process is in the How to Engineer Performance lesson
- Problem Solving Certifications teach you how to make data-driven decisions
- Mechanical Systems Certifications teach you about the variables and how to optimize them.
- Driving through Data activities make sure you have at least one good driver (proven with data to be the best).
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting Resources are important to ongoing prep and performance

Enterprise: Graphic Design |
Display your vehicle and team identity at events. |
Enterprise & Innovation unit on Marketing |
Enterprise: Business Pitches and Presentations
- 30-Second Pitch
- 3-Minute Fever Pitch
- 8-Minute Multi-Media Presentation
These help educate others on what your team is doing and needs.. Define how you’ll organize and make decisions. |
Events may have only one of the pitches so refer to your guide for details.
You may upload a video of your 30-second pitch then give your 3-minute pitch or 8-minute presentation live to judges. |
Enterprise & Innovation
- Project Management is important to content about your team
- Business Modeling helps to generate a full view of your team’s value to the community
- Art of the Pitch will help you craft a good one
|
Data-Driven Design
Teams are constantly improving and innovating. This is essentially a STEM Fair project that is loosely (or very) related to the Racing challenge, transportation, etc. |
Two parts to the DDD:
- Technical Report
- Onsite Interview (w/ visual support)
Upload your technical report by the advance deadline so judges can review completely (you deserve it!).
Engage in the interview with judges at your pit area during events.
Judges use rubrics provided in the NSL Handbook. |
The DDD module in this course provides assistance on planning and timing your project as well as help in understanding expectations for technical reports. |
Energy Bonus
Charge your battery using alternatives to the wall-plug. |
Submit a technical report on your design and products that will be judged based on the rubric in the NSL Handbook.
(No onsite interview) |
It is essentially a DDD project with an energy subject matter.
Ten80 also offers additional Energy Challenge curriculum to help with solar and wind projects. Contact us for more info. |
MODS! RoboRaceCar
(Robotics and Coding)
Modify and program your car to drive autonomously and complete the challenge of driving a circular track, as fast as possible, without crashing. Bonus points for automating both steering and throttle. |
Two parts to MODS!:
- Technical Report
- Onsite Testing
Upload your technical report by the advance deadline so judges can review completely (you deserve it!).
Onsite a walled track is erected that you’ll have either X tries or X minutes for formal testing. |
MODS! Robo RaCeCar provides one approach using an optional add-on kit (though you may already have the stuff needed).
Student Rover Challenge is a different NSL Challenge altogether but it does also offer skills and lessons to help with this event. |
MODS! Dragster
Modify your stock car to race on a drag strip or design one from scratch. |
Two parts to MODS!:
- Technical Report
- Onsite Testing
Upload your technical report by the advance deadline so judges can review completely (you deserve it!).
Onsite you’ll race head-to-head with other dragsters in a bracket published onsite. |
MODS! Dragster provides some information to help. This design project is open-ended for you (as long as you follow GIP). |
Aerodynamic Design |
In all events, submit technical report by advance deadline on your final design and car body.
At regionals, this is all you do. Judges will complete the scoring onsite by observing your car body.
At NSL Finals, your car body will also be tested for low drag and high downforce in a 1:10 scale wind tunnel. |
Aerodynamic Design
Good aerodynamics can also help a bit during Oval Superspeedway races. |
